last wednesday venezuelan pitcher Armando Galarraga was one out shy from appearing in the statistics with de 21st perfect game in MLB history.
In the bottom of the 9th inning with two out Jason Donald hit a ground ball to the first base zone which Cabrera fielded, Galarraga covered the base and the throw was in time; incredibly the first base umpire called it safe, taking the great deed away from him before the amazement of everyone in attendance and millions watching on tv.
Galarraga would be the second latinomerican player to throw a perfect game and the first venezuelan.
Galarraga's reaction was a surprise, for he only showed a smile to the Umpire letting him know that he disagreed and returned to the mound while Cabrera, Donald and most of the people in the dugout runned their hands over thir heads as a sing of amazement.
It's incredible how Jim Joyce (first base umpire) was the only one who saw the runner safe. Everybody else around the play saw it out in the first moment.
After the game Joyce said that it was the most important call of his career, he apologized because had made a mistake, and was ashamed for he costed the kid a perfect game.
with tears in his eyes he said to Galarraga that he was sorry, and asked to excuse him
later Galarraga said that he forgave him, that everybody make mistakes, and he knows tha joyce feels worse for what he did than Galarraga feels for not being in the statics with his perfect game.
The next day, thursday, june 3rd, Joyce was the Chief Umpire at the Comerica Park and Galarraga went to the home plate to give him the tigers starting lineup; Joyce took it with tears in his eyes again, then Galarraga was presented a convertible car, as a consolation we may say..
